Overview: JCI Patient Safety Pathways Initiative

Although there have been significant advancements over the past decades, substantial gaps in safety and quality remain in healthcare delivery, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and the public sector. Even within the same country, there are notable geographical disparities in equitable access to safe care. Healthcare organizations (HCOs) and countries worldwide face numerous challenges and have competing priorities for focused interventions, often struggling to invest adequately in safety and quality.

In alignment with the Global Patient Safety Action Plan 2021-2030 and JCI’s vision, JCI introduces Patient Safety Pathways. This pioneering initiative aims to develop, strengthen, sustain, and enhance patient safety initiatives with actionable plans, especially for organizations in the early stages of establishing their patient safety and quality infrastructure.

JCI is working in collaboration with countries and organizations to advance safer patient care. The Patient Safety Pathways initiative focuses on the needs of HCOs starting their journey towards eliminating avoidable patient harm by creating pathways for incremental improvements and transformative changes. This collaboration includes working with Ministries of Health (MOHs), national and international HCOs, and patient advocacy organizations at various stages of development to enhance the quality of healthcare and patient safety.

The Pathways Initiative Components:

Patient Safety Grand Rounds

A series of online discussions to engage thought leaders in patient safety at policy, systems, and healthcare delivery levels through open dialogue, collaborative learning, problem-solving, and sharing of best practices and success stories.

JCI Training of Trainers (ToT)

Develop a cadre of trainers as “Patient Safety Champions.” These champions will be equipped with the necessary knowledge and tools who in turn can help develop skills and competencies for healthcare professionals, fostering a culture of safety at the national and organizational level.

Needs Assessment and Technical Support

Tailored technical support to selected HCOs from LMICs, based on their identified needs and gaps.

JCI Patient Safety Grand Rounds

JCI Patient Safety Grand Rounds are virtual events designed to engage leaders in patient safety across policy, health systems, and healthcare delivery.

This series fosters an inclusive environment for patient safety stakeholders to disseminate patient safety tools and resources; and highlights the importance of international partnerships and collaborative learning.

Grand Rounds Objectives:

  • Foster a culture of transparency and collaboration
  • Bridge the gap among patients, clinicians, and administrators
  • Encourage adoption of best practices and innovative solutions
  • Build a community around patient safety

Why Attend a Grand Rounds Session:

  • Generate ideas, learn from best practices and experiences
  • Explore future directions and emerging trends
  • Exchange resources, cutting-edge knowledge, technologies, and strategies to enhance patient safety globally

Training of Trainers (ToT) Program

Training of Trainers (ToT) program has been developed as another key component of JCI Patient Safety Pathways Initiative to address global gaps in patient safety capabilities. The ToT program involves collaboration with national MOHs and HCOs.

The ToT program aims to develop a cadre of trainers equipped with knowledge, skills, and tools to educate healthcare professionals on patient safety practices, fostering a culture of safety in HCOs.

The program is designed to ensure flexibility, engagement, and practical application, enabling trainers to become effective advocates for patient safety.

ToT Objectives:

  • Training Curriculum: Develop the training curriculum and resources for trainers
  • Certification Program: Conduct certification process to recognize trainers
  • Global Network of Master Trainers: Establish a worldwide pool of expert trainers in patient safety

Nomination Process

JCI is inviting MOHs and HCOs to nominate participants for the role of future patient safety trainers. Key responsibilities of Certified JCI Patient Safety Trainers include:

  • Conduct Training Sessions: Deliver patient safety training to staff within their organizations
  • Mentorship: Serve as a resource and mentor for colleagues on best practices in patient safety
  • Collaboration: Work with hospital leadership to design and implement safety improvement projects
  • Evaluation: Assess the impact of training programs and provide feedback for continuous improvement
  • Advocacy: Promote a culture of safety and continuous learning within their facilities

Patient Safety Pathways Technical Support

Understanding that each organization is at a different stage of readiness, JCI offers customized, ongoing guidance and technical support to HCOs, along with advocacy and policy dialogue at all levels.

By utilizing structured patient safety tools that align with global standards, comprehensive needs assessments and gap analyses will be conducted. Based on these evaluations, JCI works with HCOs to develop action plans and provide technical support to achieve measurable improvements in patient safety and quality.

Patient Safety Pathways Assessment Tool

The JCI Patient Safety Pathways Assessment Tool is designed to assist healthcare organizations and facilities in evaluating crucial aspects of patient safety and identifying gaps. Aligned with the Global Patient Safety Action Plan 2021-2030 and JCI standards, this tool ensures an assessment of vital patient safety and quality elements at the organizational level, especially in LMICs.
